Broadcom Takedown: 2/11/2024

It seems today the bad guys have won. Today, at 2:09PM EST, my mirror has been shut down and will not return.

The site is currently under a DDOS attack as I can tell from the linear IPs. I can fight this, however, if Broadcom comes down as they threatened, I don’t want them to go up the chain and kick my chair from under me by going after my online assets. It is a grand shame as I am doing nothing different from Wayback or Archive Dot Org.

It was a very fun 24 hours and I appreciate the love and support from the community here. I genuinely hope the camaraderie I experienced today is burned into their brain.

Long live what VMware once was and cheers to the trials and tribulations of afterdark nights past.

Welp, it was a good run. I hope everyone who needed it was able to grab it. What’s done now is done. I’ve been asked both publicly and through DMs if I will create a torrent. I think this would imply wrong doing and only serve to gas them up further. The goals of the company have shifted and they have made it crystal clear they want nothing to do with community or small business.

Tell you what though, I was extremely excited to hear from XCP-NG. They have iSCSI support slated for later this year! I’d like to think it was my incessant bitching that forced their hand to consider the feature. Once this feature makes it into a stable release, I am going to migrate my network and make a small donation to their project.

This sucks to hear , but kind of a good thing i never tried to fully build out my lab with ESXi.

Yeah, I’m sorry to hear that you had to close down the mirror. I don’t think there’s a part of the Broadcom that cares about the community which means I get the pleasure of figuring out what I’ll be jumping onto next with respect to virtualization.

Lucky! I guess my theory was to stay close to the edge with work’s lab and use it as a sort of staging ground. It’s a shame that times are changing…

Well, worst case, 8.x will get you to 2030, I believe. Hell, some people are still running 6.x. It was sort of my intention to jump once I obtain new hardware (Can’t wait for the Dell R750’s to be 400-ish dollars - Am I right?!?). I think someone released a video not too long ago that the XCP-NG VMware migration wizard was scary good, so I’m keeping that on the books for right now.

I’m on 8.X at the moment via VMUG which hasn’t been burned to the ground quite yet which means I do have some time so we’ll see what happens here in the near term. Also, I’ll take a few EPYC 9474Fs please…lol.
