Many who follow me on X will know I’m gearing up to light a second Dell R730 and slowly move everything over.
I will accomplish this by installing 24 fiber gbics and an Intel XL710 4 port SFP+ NIC in each host.
Game plan is to light the second host, re-IP the SAN so it can be connected to both hosts at the same time, then shut down the VM on the original host and boot it on the new one. I’m hoping for as little down time as possible.
After everything seems happy, I’ll wipe the original host and perform the necessary hardware maintenance with it.
Clean up should be easy as it will be deleting the slower links out of vCenter and physically removing the old copper cables.
I figure it will be nice to have two hosts again. It will make maintaining things a bit easier.
I’ll probably write an article on this postmortem, just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Everything that seems easy can always be a pain in the ass…
